According to a study, there’s no easy answer to the rising population of stray dogs in the US. For an approximate population of seventy million stray dogs, only about six to eight million cats and dogs enter the nation’s 3,500 shelters every year. What happens to the remaining millions? These dogs have to live the rest of their lives out in the streets.
One specific dog, later named Lakita, stayed outside a woman’s porch one day in Kentucky, USA. As the woman looked at the sleeping Lakita, she thought the dog is about to die or, worse, dead. She called the rescuers immediately to get some help.
“She looked up at me, and she just looked defeated, like she [gave] up on life.” Said Tracy Korfhage, the Cofounder of MisPits and Friends Rescue. The rescuers found the dog very skinny and very withdrawn as if she’s tired of her life.
They didn’t approach Lakita at first as it could pose dangerous situations since she was a stray and smelled horrible. But then this poor dog appears to realize that she could get some help, so she started walking around. At that moment, they realized they have to do something.
They brought Lakita in the center to get treated and fed. They hoped that somebody would look for her, but it turned out, no one came. One week later, and after having a meal plan where she would eat several meals a day, she gained weight. However, she still looks so exhausted.
The shelter put her up for adoption months later by dressing her up in cute costumes. That’s when her parents, Sebastian and Ashtyn Garrison, found her in an adorable tutu and decided to adopt her immediately.
Lakita was a very shy and timid dog at first, but as she got comfortable in her forever home, she became very playful. She loves spending time with the couple’s kids as well.
“She’ll [definitely] bring light into your day if you have a bad day,” Sebastian said. They even call her their big, fur queen!
Lakita’s story is a reminder to all of us that we don’t need more people like Sebastian and Ashtyn. We need to be like them. Prepare your tissues as you watch her story here:
