I cannot imagine spending my entire life, day in and day out, in the same room for years. No interaction with people, except for the occasional bit of food pushed through the door, if they remembered. No exercise, no fresh air and sunlight, no bath, year in and year out, as long as I could remember.
Then one day, out of nowhere, these unknown human rescuers appear and take you away to an unknown destination. They clean you up and poke a bunch of things at you and in you. You come out with less of yourself than you went in with. Then you are again taken to another strange location where more humans appear excited to see you. This is all so foreign and scary.
So begins the story of each dog brought into Dogs Deserve Better Good Newz Rehab Center in Smithfield, VA. It is said that they usually show their dogs once they are healed and ready for adoption. But this was a precious moment with one of the new members, Bernard, that needed to be seen.
When Bernard arrived, he was afraid of all of the new surroundings. He stayed back in the kennel and was unwilling to come out. They took the top of the kennel out so there was easier access. But Bernard jumped out and hid himself.
After a while, he got back into the bottom of his crate. This is where the filming picks up, so we can see the beginning of Bernard’s recovery experience with human touch. All they wanted to let him know was, that he was safe and they could be trusted. Little by little. . . . . .
